I usually refrain from taking apple juice because any fruit juice for me is plain sugar. I always have this rule: A fruit is better than a puree… a puree is better than a juice! BUT new studies may change my way of dealing with juices.
A recent study done in University of Massachussets Lowell published in the August issue of the International Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease looked at the effect of apple juice in animal models and its effect in memory.
The FINDINGS are interesting:
What’s the implication of the Study in out daily practice?
With the baby boomers reaching the age where we fear the era of forgetfulness… this study is pretty reassuring. The antioxidant properties in apple may have helped in increasing the amount of neurotransmitters in the brain that improved the outcome in terms of memory.
I usually recommend apple as fruit serving to my patients with diabetes because it has a lower glycemic index- meaning it does not significantly increase ones blood sugar. With this new data on apples… I may have helped them unknowingly in helping preserve their memory!
Other vegetables and fruits may have similar outcome but for now, foods rich in antioxidant properties like apple are known to possess properties that may prevent cognitive decline due to dietary and genetic deficiencies and aging.

Doc Ger! Can gallstone be flushed out by drinking 5 glasses of 100% apple juice for 5 days and on the 6th day, epsom salt, lemon juice and olive oil? I read this thing in a local newspaper. Thanks!

No data to support it Milo. But looking at the concoction, I see no harm in trying. What you can do is repeat your ultrasound after the concoction and tell me what happens. Be sure to have your ultrasound done and read by the same reader

Doc Gerry,
Good day.
I’ve been diagnosed with gallbladder polyp in 2005 during my pre-employment physical exam. In 2006, the ultrasound procedure conducted on my LGBPS showed measurement of 0.5 cm. In 2007, the measurement was 0.53 cm while in 2008, it was now 0.7 cm. Our next APE will be in June 2009.
I’m experiencing some intermittent pains in my lower right abdomen while at some times there are pains in my lower middle and left abdomen just below my ribs. My family commented that my eyes are yellowish.
Our company doctor suggested that i should undergo laparoscopic surgery to remove my gallbladder. I plan to seek second opinion since the thought of having my gallbladder removed really scares me.
Are the abdominal pains and yellowish eye connected with my having gallbladder polyp? What would be my best course of action? Please advise.
Thank you very much.

Hi Erick…any surgery recommnedation by one doctor requires a second opinin indeed. Am not sure if you also have gallstones on ultrasound…if so with abdominal pain…it is advised to be removed laparoscopically which is a simple procedure.

Apple Fruit is so good, its the type of fruit you can eat at any time, it has no acid, its long lasting, a fresh one can be stored for over a month, just enjoy it without peeling.
Finally, you do not need a knife for peeling just enjoy Apple Fruit
