First Annual Meeting of AACE-Philippine Chapter Report of Hossein Gharib, MD, The President Elect of AACE in First Messenger
Dr. Augusto Litonjua joined AACE in 1995 and was recognized as a Fellow of the College in 1997. Dr. Litonjua was an early admirer of AACE for its mission, vision, and dedication to clinical endocrinologists as well as endocrine patients . Dr. Litonjua had been a member of many endocrine organizations both in Philippines and elsewhere. In his country he is remembered as the “Father of Endocrinology,” has been a founding member and President of the Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, as well as President of the Philippines Diabetes Association. Thus, his appreciation of AACE was based on long experience in endocrinology and the recognition that AACE was different.
Between 1995 and 2005, Dr. Litonjua encouraged many Philippine endocrinologists to join AACE. In 2006, under his leadership and with the help of AACE Staff in Jacksonville, a group of AACE members developed the charter and mission of a new organization: the Philippine-AACE Chapter. The Chapter now has 120 members. At the AACE Annual Congress in Seattle earlier this year, 40 Philippine Chapter members were in attendance.
The First Annual Meeting of the Chapter was held August 10-12, 2007 at Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa, ten minutes outside Cebu City. This is a spectacular resort with several hundred sleeping rooms, multiple restaurants, several swimming pools, a spa, and a private beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The theme of the Congress was “Nurturing the Seeds and Polishing the Pearls of Endocrinology.” Program chair was Dr. George Tan, President of AACE Chapter, and the local host was Dr. Gerry Tan, a Mayo-trained endocrinologist in Cebu, and Assistant Secretary of the Chapter. The meeting was well-received and very successful.Among390 registrants, there were surgeons, family physicians, primary care doctors, endocrine fellows and IM residents. Some 80 endocrinologists, 60 AACE members, attended the meeting.
Topics included thyroid cancer, osteoporosis, adrenal hypertension, diabetes and pregnancy, and new treatments in diabetes mellitus. Speakers included, from the United States, Drs. James Gavin III, Hossein Gharib, Cecilia Lansang, and Steven Petak; from the Philippines, Drs. Augusto Litonjua, George Tan, Gerry Tan, Ricardo Fernando, Ramon Caceres, Grace Alferos, Estrellita Fernando-Lopez and Victor Adalbert de Villa; and from Singapore, Drs. Jagat Mukherjee and Melvin Tan.
Scientific presentations were of high quality and at the end of each one there was adequate time for interaction with the audience; audiovisual system was superb; and the meeting hall and food unparalleled. The gala dinner included music, drinks, dancing, and a pig roast. At the conclusion of the meeting, Chapter President Dr. George Tan, thanked speakers and attendees, and announced that plans were already underway for the second annual meeting in the Philippines. Dr. Tan extended an invitation to his AACE colleagues in the U.S. to join Philippine Chapter meeting in 2008.

WHAT IS AACE PHILIPPINE CHAPTER:
The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, Philippine Chapter is a professional organization of physicians specializing in the art and practice of endocrinology. It upholds the mission and vision of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists in the United States – its mother association.
The eight founding Fellows of AACE Philippines all possess excellent academic backgrounds and impressive achievements. They have attained distinction in the field of endocrinology, the main reason for their acceptance as International Fellows of the American College of Endocrinology. They are leaders with very active involvement in many aspects of Endocrinology – a mixture of medical college professors, writers, researchers and community leaders from all over the Philippines who are pillars of endocrinology in their home turf. The members of AACE had seen in AACE an opportunity by which theories may be well applied in clinical practice, many were inspired by the success story of AACE battling against many odds for its survival as a distinct association giving voice to clinical endocrinology in America.
We exists based on the following principles:
1.AACE Philippines was established to give face and recognition to Filipino endocrinologists who are members of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
2.AACE Philippines is willing to share its resources towards the attainment of the common goal of better endocrine care and practice in the Philippines.
3.AACE Philippine Chapter has maintained its highest respect to the Philippine Society of Endocrine and Metabolism (PSEM) as the sole Endocrine Society in the Philippines where members of the chapter are also proud to be members of PSEM. Though, projects may be distinct from each other because AACE
4.AACE Philippine chapter is an arm of AACE Organization in the United States similar in structure and function to other existing chapters like the American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Surgeons, American Association of Family Medicinewho have established their chapters in the Philippines extending advocacy projects for clinicians and patients as well.
5.The chapter also envisioned itself to collaborate with other medical societies with interest in the field of endocrinology in the Philippines for a holistic endocrine healthcare.
There may be one goal, but the more organizations there are with people who are willing to work towards that goal, the better and faster the goal is achieved. Moreover, each organization has its own charisma. AACE, in the words of its President Steven Petak, is first and foremost an advocacy association for the clinical endocrinologist. This statement has been issued in order to explain our existence and its entry to the Philippine Medical scene.

Dear Officers of AACE;
Greetings from Nice, France.
I am Elizabeth Soliday-Naui, a Phd communication student from the University of the Philippines. I am here in Nice, France writing my dissertation about health communication and my area of research is diabetes communication campaigns; how it is done here in France and how can we learn from them.
In the course of my research, I came across Dr. Peter Schwarz, a Diabetologist and founder of the network “who are active in diabetes prevention”, which is based in Dresden, Germany. I am working closely with him spreading information around the world regarding diabetes prevention and management. I was tasked to come up with a 4 pages newsletter to be posted online in our network and it would be a situational analysis of diabetes in the Philippines. I am writing to you to ask permission to allow me to get data from the things posted in your website. I will surely acknowledge where these data came from.
I have a personal experience with AACE because we are part of the team that launched this organization at the Ayala Museum. I have worked closely with Dr. George Tan. i don’t know if he remembers me though.
I would appreciate it if you would give me a confirmation that you are allowing me to get data from your website. Thank you very much and I hope to hear from you.
Respectfully yours,
Elizabeth Soliday-Naui

I totally agree with exactly what you are discussing on this website

Hello, Neat post. There is a problem together with your site in internet
explorer, might check this? IE nonetheless is the marketplace leader and a big part of people will leave out your magnificent writing because of this problem.

Do not use common numbes like your best company blogs birth date,
street number, phone number, and use iit to commit fraud.
And, in the trash. Discarding documents with personal and financial accounts.
By law, the notifiedcredit bureau is required to strike that info

I’m really enjoying the theme/design of your blog.
Do you ever run into any browser compatibility
issues? A handful of my blog readers have complained about my site not operating correctly in Explorer but looks
great in Safari. Do you have any advice to help fix this issue?

I was curious if you ever considered changing the page layout of your
website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people
could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?
