The Will Power To Stop The Urge To Eat…

July 11, 2007

3582617281.jpgI follow this simple principle to following a strict dietary habit that I feel is the most rewarding in terms of curbing one’s desire to eat… and eat MORE!

When I see a patient in the clinic who is apparently Gaining Weight or with fluctuating blood sugars especially 2 hours after a meal, I know there is a problem of Discipline and Will Power. The Urge to Eat defeated his Desire to stop eating and as a result, the patient gains weight and has high blood sugar levels.

Because of my family history of Diabetes with my two siblings having Prediabetes, my risk is high to have the same problem…so I follow what I preach to my patient.  Experience wise…I know the Will Power should defeat the Urge To eat!

It may not be easy but it’s a doable thing.  I eat my oat meal for breakfast at around 6 AM. I then have a half of a sandwich by 9 AM plus a cup of Kafe Latte which I place in my coffee heater and have small sips in between patients and finish it by 12N.  Dont wait before you feel hungry beofre having lunch- eat at 12N whether you’re hungry or not! Sometimes the Desire to eat more can be rather strong but if you have the Will Power then after finishing a plate of half a cup of rice, 1 slice of meat/fish and veggies you should STAND UP and leave the dining table and start working on something else.  If you continue to nurture that desire to eat then definitely you will eat more! Then the guilt feeling starts to sink in once you feel bloated and FULL! You therefore FAILED!

Then slowly, you will notice that you feel good because you were disciplined enough to know when to stop and fight that bad desire to make you sick!

Remember my simple meassage of Will Power… and if you carry this habit for life… then I guarantee you good health.  Remember also that everything that comes out in our body comes from what and how much we put inside our mouths! Out due to IN!

Have the Will Power To Fight The Urge To Eat For Health!

Too Little Sleep Because Of Work?

July 10, 2007

imagesslp.jpgIt’s not uncommon to party all night… study for our exams (especially when I was in Medical school) or staying awake late at night because of hospital duties OR as parents being awake all night with a sick child!  Whew… those were the times!

During these “Awake” periods our body tends to compensate by making us sleep more the next day…our bodies way of        ” catching up”.  These acute sleep debt or loses are not known to be harmful because our body is able to adapt to acute changes in life from sleep to emotions to hormonal changes.  What is not known until now is the chronic lack of sleep where we lose a little bit of sleep over a period of days, months or even years due to work and work and work!!!!!

Understanding the effects of chronic lack of sleep was recently published online by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) from the group of Northwestern University.  In that study, the researchers discovered that “when animals are partially sleep deprived over consecutive days they no longer attempt to catch up on sleep, despite an accumulating sleep deficit.”

The impact of these finding in humans is immense as experimental studies in humans showed that chronic partial sleep loss of even two to three hours per night was found to have detrimental effects on the body.  The effects include: impairments in cognitive performance, as well as cardiovascular, immune and endocrine functions.

The problem with these sleep-debt people is that they dont look sleepy nor report feeling sleepy BUT their performance on tasks was shown to decline.  Likewise, repeated partial sleep restriction in humans has been linked to metabolic dysfunction and cardiovascular disease.  In fact in our recent Endocrine Society Meeting, Sleep debt is now considered one major risk factor for Obesity and Diabetes!!!!

So how do we counter the effects of chronic sleep loss?

Harvard Women’s Health Watch suggests: if you’ve missed 10 hours of sleep over one week, make up for it over the weekend and the following week. If you’ve missed sleep for decades, it could take a few weeks to repay the debt. Plan a vacation with a light schedule, and sleep every night until you wake naturally. Once you’ve determined how much sleep you need, factor it into your daily schedule.

So guys… it’s not bad to work and finish our tasks on time BUT if we overdo things to satify somebody even ourselves at the expense of our health…is something else!

Enjoy Your Work But Stay Within The LIMITS!

One Hour of Exercise Weekly Can Lower Your Blood Pressure…

July 6, 2007

Just One Hour of Exercise A Week Controls Hypertension!!

4150893541.jpg….says one headline that caught my attention.  Apparently this amount of aerobic exercise can be spread out over a week and has been shown to reduce systolic blood pressure ( the upper number) by an average of 12 points and the diastolic reading ( the lower number) by 8 points.

The study which was published in the American Journal of Hypertension, proves that one does not need to really spend a lot of time working out to get a benefit!  But the study also showed that the more you exercise the more the benefit in terms of lowering ones BP suggesting that we should do more than just an hour a week.

It is very important to remember that several medical guidelines recommend 30 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week because physical activity has been shown to reduce ones risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity.

My Advise?

  1. Make sure you make exercise FUN… in so doing… you can sustain the idea of doing it daily!
  2. Make it part of your daily routine just like driving a car of eating your meals! Once exercise has made its way into your daily schedule, then it becomes part of your daily routine!

We should have only ONE goal in mind when we think about Exercise…simply….

Are You Eating What’s Right For Your Bones? … Nutrition and Osteoporosis

July 3, 2007

Bone health is an important part of one’3681618293.jpgs yearly checkup.  The loss of bone mass contributes to early disability and death if the consequences of bone disease take its toll.  Fractures involving the spine and the hip contribute to significant morbidity and mortality that prevention of bone loss is the KEY!

Heres an important Fact Sheet from the University of Nebraska that I want to share because this involves common concepts in bone health involving common foods that we eat:

______________________________________________________________

While dietary calcium and vitamin D are important in helping prevent or treat osteoporosis, the following dietary concerns also come into play.

1.Fiber. Excessive fiber can interfere with calcium absorption. Dr. Miriam Nelson (author, Strong Women, Strong Bones) advises that the fiber occurring in food is probably not a problem. But, if you’re sprinkling extra fiber on food, such as bran on cereal, that might affect calcium absorption.

2.Caffeine. Excessive caffeine can increase urinary excretion of calcium. A 6 oz. cup of coffee has about 100 milligrams caffeine — the actual amount would depend on brewing time, etc. Tea, soft drinks and various medications also can contain caffeine. There are about 40 milligrams of caffeine in 6 oz. of regular brewed tea; green tea may contain less caffeine. Some soft drinks are comparable to tea in caffeine content.

3.Excessive sodium. Excessive sodium can increase urinary calcium excretion. Go easy on the salt shaker; taste before you salt. Limit the number of high salt foods. The Food and Nutrition Board recommends sodium be limited to 2,400 mg daily.

4.Alcohol. Consuming more than seven alcoholic drinks per week is associated with an increased risk of low bone density and of falls and fractures. Obviously, you shouldn’t drink seven drinks all in the same day.

5.Oxalic acid. This acid, present in certain foods, such as spinach, chard and beet greens, binds up the calcium in these foods. However, it doesn’t seem to affect the calcium in foods served with them. These greens are still good for you and may actually help improve calcium status in other ways. Also, though chocolate is a source of oxalic acid, it doesn’t seem to tie up the calcium in milk if you drink chocolate milk.

6.Soft drinks. When soft drinks replace milk as a beverage, individuals are drastically reducing the calcium content of their diets.

Nutrition will always remain a part of once daily life whether for health and to prevent disease… be it for diabetes, obesity, hypertension or osteoporosis.

Yoga and Your Weight…

June 13, 2007

2622133215.jpgExercise your body has been shown to help lead healthier lives.  But there may be some exercises which make a person more inclined to eat.  It is now known that aerobic exercises like running can trigger this response.  But a study conducted on yoga proved this to be a better option in helping patient maintain weight or be conscious of their body image resulting in weight loss.

But waht is Yoga?  According to Wikipedia: Yoga is a group of ancient spiritual; practices that originated form India and has become primarily associated with the practice of asanas  or postures.  You can see several yoga centers anywhere in the world but I have only come accross this article only now that looked at the benefit of yoga on weight.

It is said that “Yoga may make women feel better about their bodies, steering them away from eating disorders.”, according to a  new study  published in Psychology of Women Quarterly by affecting the mind-body relationship.  Likewise, yoga may actually help prevent and treat eating disorders.

In the study, the authors compared women who practiced yoga regularly with those who did other forms of exercise. Women who hadn’t done either form of exercise for at least two years were also included.  The result showed that yoga indeed can affect a persons attitude to self image and may in fact affect bad eating habits that may lead one to gain weight.

Here’s one tip for those desiring to exercise but is confused as to what regimen to use.  Is Yoga good for you?  Well based on this study… it has benefits.  Its a form of mind and body relaxation and an activity that may prove to work for you!

Cheers To Yoga!

Sleep and The Risks of Obesity and Diabetes…

June 9, 2007

One of the highlights of the Endocrine Society meeting that I attended just this week in Toronto Canada was  a plenary session on Sleep Debt and the Risk of Diabetes and Obesity

While reading Canada’s daily newpaper, the headline was that… companies are now allowing their workers also to take a nap in between work schedules with nap stations in their offices to allow workers to relax and sleep and be more productive as a result.  Suggesting that sleep debt is actually affecting productivity in the work place!

BUT how much sleep is healthy? or how many hours of sleep are needed to reduce diabetes and obesity risks?

The magic number is 7 hours!!!

A study published in Diabetes Care this March of 2006 showed that  men who got little sleep (< 7 hours ) or a lot of sleep (8-10 hours) were more likely to develop diabetes than men with 7 hours of nightly sleep.  The same token people with less than 7 hours of sleep have a 23% to 73% increased risk of obesity!

But quality of sleep is also as important. Deep sleep is a must.  Even 7 hours of light sleep may do no good but harm.

Again the stress hormones may be responsible as more activation of the sympathetic nervous system resulting in overproduction of cathecholamies may be result in the increased risk.  Likewise, obesity may follow if you sleep less because you easily feel hungry and you tend to eat more if you’re awake!

So…..

Sleep Well and Be Well!

How Much Caffeine is In Our Drinks?

May 10, 2007

2333326284.jpgWe know caffeine is a stimulant.  Therefore we tend to grab a cup of coffee everytime we feel we need a jolt out of our daily routine resulting in exhaustion or just mere tiredness.  But researchers have warned us about too much caffeine because of its health dangers including the effect of caffeine on the heart and bones as well as our ability to take a good sleep.  Likewise studies have shown too much caffeine can lead to stomach problems like ulcer or esophagitis.  People who likewise drink Energy drinks should also be cautioned because all they contain are sugars and caffeine.

Students trying to cram for an exam should be warned of the palpitations and jitteriness that they will feel if their body is loaded with caffeine.  On the other hand, those wanting to have a good sleep or the insomniacs should limit caffeine during the 4 to 6 hours before bedtime.  It is estimated that approximately 50% of the caffeine consumed at 7 PM remains in the body at 11 PM…the time frame that we want to go to bed!

One may actually be avoiding coffee per se to avoid problems with sleeping but remember that caffeine can be present in many different foods, beverages and medications.

Coffee (5 oz. cup)
Brewed, drip method 60 – 180 mg caffeine
Instant 30 – 120 mg caffeine
Decaffeinated 1 – 5 mg caffeine
Tea (5 oz. cup)
Brewed 60 – 180 mg caffeine
Instant 25 – 50 mg caffeine
Iced (12 oz. Cup) 67 – 76 mg caffeine
Chocolate
dark/semisweet 1 oz. – 5 – 35 mg caffeine
Soft drinks
cola (12 oz.) 36 – 47 mg caffeine
Non-prescription drugs
Dexatrim 200 mg caffeine
No Doz 100 mg caffeine
Excedrin 65 mg caffeine

But drinking coffee per se has many health benefits including the possibility of preventing diabetes and liver and other ailments as well as help us lose weight.  And therefore…Just as always…we recommend drinking or taking anything or even doing things in Moderation is the key to prevent dangers because…

The DANGER of Taking Antioxidants…BEWARE!

May 8, 2007

23349167291.jpgScience is ever-changing. One study should not make one take a pill just because it shows the drug to be beneficial. Any research should be carefully done and reviewed and if published in a reputable peer reviewed journal then its worth a second look!

The story about antioxidants and their benefits is one controversy. You may have heard a lot already about the benefits and side effects of Vitamins E and C but what is really the real score?  So before grabbing these vitamins… take to consider the facts below:

The results of this study came from a meta-analysis of 68 randomized trials with a total of 232,606 patients published in the February 28 issue of JAMA.

  • Vitamin C does not appear to be detrimental but it is not beneficial either.  It likewise did not decrease or increase  mortality.
  • Trials of selenium showed it to be neither of benefit nor harm.

But the most striking results that I want readers to take note is that:

…. Vitamins A and E actually increased the risk for mortality whether it is used alone or in combination….

These data only point to one thing:

…That people should NOT take these over the counter supplements marketed as anti-oxidant vitamins in an effort to prevent illness…because…THEY DON’T!

…And as the usual cliche… we should instead” eat a balanced diet and take regular exercise“… as full proof to healthy living with NO SHORTCUTS…because…

Tips To Eat Less

May 4, 2007

imagesl.jpgThe main obstacle in losing weight is FOOD. The availability of tasty high caloric foods  in a glance within minutes within our sight anytime and anywhere tempts us to eat, savor the taste and enjoy! That’s how man was born to live! To work hard and enjoy the fruits of ones labor by eating a satisfying meal after a hard days work.  Unfortunately… we enjoy the food so much and its overabundance has lead to a lot of suffering instead!

BUT…by eating well and balancing the kinds of food and taking time to consider what to eat and how much during each meal should make a difference long term.

I found this interesting  article on tips on how to eat small from the April issue of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter which I want to share:

  • Select smaller bowls, plates and spoons for serving and eating. Research has shown that people eat more when food is served in or eaten from larger dishes.
  • Get rid of high-calorie leftovers; store them in inconvenient locations or in opaque containers. — Seeing a calorie-laden goody can trigger the desire to eat. Food in the basement pantry is less tempting than leftovers on the kitchen counter. Weight loss is easier when healthy, low-calorie foods are within sight and easy reach.
  • Buy small packages and serve or order small quantities. Larger packages or larger portions often lead people to eat more than they would if the serving or package were smaller. After serving appropriate portions, put leftovers away immediately or, at a minimum, keep the serving dishes off the dining table.

Actually, we know these tips exist but constant reminder may help us follow these tips if we are really serious in our quest for…

Better Health Through Healthy Weight!

Losing Weight By Managing HUNGER

April 30, 2007

imagesrt.jpgOf the many diet fads that are out today… probably the one that I believe has the best physiological basis is limiting intake by preventing hunger.  And of the different foods that we eat, we seldom select which of the many can make us feel full faster without necessarily putting us off balance in weight!

In one study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the lead author Dr Susan Holt established a satiety index. Taking similar portions of popular foods with the same amount of calories… then compare them with a slice of white bread, giving it a rank of 100.  The popular oatmeal ( which I eat every morning) has a high satiety level at 209.  The yummy doughnut on the other hand ranked 68. A similar calorie serving of boiled potatoes ranked highest at 323,  while French fries score just 116.

The above study shows that with the same amount of calories, eating a bowl of oatmeal already makes you feel full.  BUT you need to eat 3 to 4 doughnuts or 2 packs of french fries to reach your satiety level!  But how many calories have you accumulated?

Water on the other hnad play a very important role in achieving satiety BUT not the water we drink with our meals.  Talking about satiety or the feeling of fullness and satisfaction, unfortunately we dont feel that with water alone!  It’s the water or volume coming from the fruits and vegetables and soup that gives us the fullness faster.  THUS, the recommendation ( which I have been advising in the past) is to start ones meal with a broth based soup to help you achieve satiety faster at a lesser calorie load!

Managing hunger in between meals with snacks can also come a long way in helping you curb that urge to eat more when your hungry. Again high in volume from fruits like apple can help achieve that satiey faster with more fiber helping you achieve fullness longer!

The key to successful weight loss is based on what you feel you are comfortable with.  It has to be a discipline or habit change that you can sustain throughout your life…to be effective and lasting!

Eating What’s Right Does Not Mean Feeling Deprived!

Tips To Avoid Getting Tired…

April 9, 2007

2950510993.jpgGetting tired has a lot of reasons.  But it may signal an illness especially diabetes or an underactive thyroid gland.  Most often however, patients start to consult us when the feeling of tiredness last more than 6 months which obviously may mean something else.  It is imprtant to remember however that tiredness can also happen during the normal changes in our lives…like stress from work or family, during menopausal state or just due to aging.

Eat for energy : a Health Tip From the Harvard Medical School

The tried-and-true advice for healthful eating also applies to keeping your energy level high:

• Eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats with an emphasis on vegetables, whole grains, and healthy oils. Taking a daily multivitamin will ensure that you get the vitamins and minerals you need, but taking extra amounts of individual nutrients won’t give you more energy.

• Eating certain types of foods in particular amounts can help prevent fatigue. Because different kinds of foods are converted to energy at different rates, some — such as candy and other simple sugars — can give you a quick lift, while others — such as whole grains and healthy unsaturated fats — supply the reserves you’ll need to draw on throughout the day.

• Eat small, frequent meals. Where energy is the issue, it’s better to eat small meals and snacks every few hours than three large meals a day. This approach can reduce your perception of fatigue because your brain, which has very few energy reserves of its own, needs a steady supply.

Reduce stress

The most common cause of persistent fatigue is stress and the emotional response to it. People who feel fatigued most of the time don’t necessarily have more stress in their lives than other people, but they may be more sensitive to its effects. Stress-induced emotions consume huge amounts of energy. Relaxation therapy can be an effective tool for reducing stress and naturally boosting your energy, particularly when used in combination with cognitive behavioral therapy. Meditation, self-hypnosis, yoga, and tai chi are all relaxation techniques. One of the easiest techniques to use is progressive muscle relaxation, which involves systematically tightening and releasing sets of muscles, beginning with your toes and progressing up your legs, torso, hands, and arms. You might also consider other relaxation therapies, including aromatherapy and massage.

The Practice of Eating Low Fat ….

April 7, 2007

This week since Thursday has been a long holiday in our country as we celebrate the Holy Week in commemoration of the Death and Suffering of Jesus Christ.  As such… it is both discipline and our catholic practice to adhere to sacrifices by not eating meat and not to do things you like best like…blogging:).

This practice is really good since you only are allowed: Fish and other seafood and vegetables! This is what I call the practice of losing weight that’s really low fat: fresh food mainly Fresh fish, Water and water to fill you up and veggies for fiber and lasting satiety!

Unfortunately though, by eating low fat does not allow one to eat as much as we want.  The cartoon below sourced from Crazy Laughs Website illustrates the point I want to make!

391.jpg

I just hope everybody after this week will continue to practice the way of healthy eating and onward to a healthier way of life!  Thanks to Holy Week!

Remember… Fresh Fish…Veggies and Plenty of Water!

The Importance of the Flu Vaccine

March 26, 2007

4184332892.jpgIt’s the time of the year that flu vaccination is again recommended. For the year 2007 … it is now recommended earlier this March due to three new strains of viruses expected to affect the region for the year.  So how can we protect from this infection and who should get the vaccination?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  recommends annual influenza vaccination for the following:

  • anybody age 50 and older;
  • children ages 6 months to 59 months;
  • women who will be pregnant during flu season; and
  • adults and children with other chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure

Patients with cardiovascular disease are of special concern since according to a recent American Heart Association guideline and advisory …. they are more likely to die from influenza than patients with any other chronic condition.  It is for this reason that one particular group of patients at risk are the diabetics who by the time of diagnosis most likely have cardiovascular disease already!

The advisory further noted:

Overall, influenza is responsible for 36,000 deaths and 225,000 hospitalizations in the United States each year.  People with cardiovascular disease are particularly vulnerable, because the flu can exacerbate heart disease symptoms directly, and can also lead to conditions like viral or bacterial pneumonia that cause flare-ups of cardiovascular disease”. Influenza vaccination is now recommended with the same enthusiasm as cholesterol and blood pressure control and other modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease”

Remember though that those who got last year’s shot should have a repeat vaccination this year because last year’s shot won’t offer protection this year.  Every year, the dominant strains of influenza virus change and therefore new vaccine is made for the particular year.

So if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma or any diseases that requires life long medications….

How Safe is A FRIED Chicken: Check if Its Cooked with Trans FAT!

March 22, 2007

1937790063.jpgTrans Fat is actually a partially Hydrogenated Vegetable oil- described by some as a man made toxin. It was actually developed as a “healthy” alternative to animal fat!  It became so popular for sometime because this is the kind of fat that can give your chicken the Crunchy feeling and great taste and the pastries a longer half life. Perfect combination of a good tasting meal and longer shelf life…definitely good for business!  But Wealth Is NOT HEALTH!

SO what’s wrong with Trans Fat?

  • Just 2.6 grams a day of trans fat raises your risk of heart disease.  That’s about half as much as you get in a typical serving of french fries.  Thus it is considered as one if not the unhelathiest Fat!
  • We are presently battling the epidemic of obesity and this trans fat may actually be one culprit because it is super fattening. It has been shown that Trans fats build up belly fat themselves resulting in the “beer belly” appearance.  Likewise trans fat also cause fat from other parts of your body to move to the belly.  Whew…. really a Bad Fat!

Remember… accumulation of fat in the abdomen is particularly dangerous because it contributes to heart disease and insulin resistance state which can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and the so called Metabolic Syndrome.

The good news is:

  • A lot of the junky foods that we love to eat that used to have lots of trans fat like the famous Oreo cookies — are now trans-fat free. Yahoooo!
  • Fast-food restaurants are now adopting measures to reduce or eliminate trans fats.

So the next time you order crunchy chicken…. please be aware if the food is being cooked trans fat free or if it is in fact cooked with one!  As a consumer … you have to right to know because it’s your health and the health of your kids that are at stake here!

Make sure to be careful with oredering fried chicken in areas where no labels are posted especially on sidewalks.  The cook themselves may not even know what kind of oil they are using.  The Blind making the Ugly….

The Ugly and The Fried!

The Way To Lose Weight: Japanese Style!

March 19, 2007

3197292687.jpgMy wife and I just had a 4 day cultural sight seeing visit to Kyoto, Nara then Osaka.  I consider this trip one of the best I had so far.  (I will soon post these sights in my travelogue blog so try checking it out what these historic sights of Japan can offer.) But one thing that really bothered me in this trip is that...There’s no DIET COKE in Japan!

If you try watching the Japanese in the streets, except for the Sumo wrestlers, they are all slim! I havent seen a single japanese whom I consider obese or overweight.  It must be their diet and their way of living and lifestyle.

This trip of ours was purely cultural.  We stayed in a Ryokan house where we slept in the floor.  Fortunately we had our own private bath but otherwise it would have been in a public bath where clothes are a NO NO!  2011165386.jpgWe were then entertained by true Geishas in Gion district and had a chance to be served food by them. We ate traditional japanese food from breakfast till dinner.  And this is where you will realize that traditional japanese servings are really small!

Kaiseki- ryori which is Japan’s artistic and seasonal way of serving food that uses the freshest ingredients of the season…says it all. It was like an eleven course meal but every dish was artistically presented in small servings that by the time you reach the fifth serving you are already full.

The concept of losing weight by eating little and slowly may have come from this tradition.  Since the foods are served in small quantities then you have the liberty to really taste each bite and enjoy the food!  We were not feeling deprived but in fact it was the opposite… we ate in small servings but boy… we were literally satisfied!

Even in their buffet … you are offered a small plate.  Not the usual plate we have in our own homes. And the chioces are filled with seaweeds, raw fish and other seafoods.  What’s interesting though is the small serving sizes they offer including the desert.  The fruits are offered to you only 1 slice of each including their yummy chocolate cake… a small really small slice that is only enough for one bite!

Now I know why when you order Diet Coke?…. you are faced with a blank stare! It’s an unknown entity in Kyoto!

Let’s all learn from the Japanese way of eating

  • eat in small portions
  • use small serving plates and
  • eat slow to allow some time to taste each dish before another one is served!

It’s the our discipline and lifestyle that matters!

Can A High Fiber Cereal Breakfast Help You Lose Weight?

March 10, 2007

3458544841.jpgExercise alone is not enough for one to lose weight.  I hear many complaints from patients that they’ve been playing badminton at least 1 hour on most days of the week and yet they havent lost weight.  Why?  Because after their game, it’s EATING time!  And this is where calories accumulate more than the calories burned during the exercise.  So in general: weight loss equates to cutting down of high dense calorie foods to lose weight then be more active to maintain that weight!

One important finding that can help us lose weight is to incorporate high fiber foods to our diet.  This one study recently published in the September 2006 issue of the Journal of American Dietetic Association showed that incorporation of a high fiber cereal to the daily meal resulted in more weight loss than in the group who only cut down their calories.

The other advantage of adding cereals to the meal plan is that… while cutting out calories or certain foods can result in some nutrients being from the diet, the addition of high fiber cereal can avoid such loses.

The study involved comparing three weight-loss strategies: exercise only; exercise plus a reduced-calorie diet that emphasized whole-grain cereals; and exercise plus a low-cal diet that included no cereals.

Those in the “cereal” group were given packets of whole-grain breakfast cereal.  The dieters lost roughly 12 pounds. What was intersting is that, the cereal group lost weight by also cutting down on saturated fat while increasing their intake of fiber, magnesium and Vitamin B-6.

Breakfast cereal with milk should not be bad after all because not only  is it high in fiber but also you  lose weight with it.

You therefore get the best of both worlds:

The benefits of High Fiber Diet and The benefits of Eating Breakfast!

Plan To Be Healthy… Start Losing The Excess!

The Benefit of Taking A Nap!

March 8, 2007

2635562638.jpgI actually want to work early… I can do more things without the distractions and my focus is great since it’s early in the morning. Once am in my clinic… it’s an uphill battle till 12N then my feeling starts to go downhill by around 2 PM.  Remember as physicians, we listen then think then diagnose then treat every person that seeks our help.  And mind you… this is non stop from 7 till 3 PM.  So I look forward to going home, have my own time and take my daily nap for around 20 minutes.  This mid day or mid afternoon nap really rejuvenates your feeling.  It relieves you of the stress that you have accumulated throughout the day!

But did you know that now there is a study that proved me right.  It has been shown in one study recently published in the February 12 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine that….

“taking siestas of any frequency or duration is associated with about a one-third reduction in mortality from coronary heart disease, particularly in working men“.

The magnitude of the reduction varied depending on whether the napping was occasional or regular.  So the more frequent you do it… means the better you handle the stress… than the less chance for the stress hormones to harm your heart!  Remember stress hormones like steroid and cathecholamines are not friendly to our bodies especially if we get the surge of these hormones everytime we get too busy at work, get angry, depressed, anxious or pressured at work.

I can always work till 7 PM but I need to reclaim the calm after the day! What will my money do if I get a heart disease? Less money!  Priority counts in making sure you know when to stop and relax…when is enough really enough!  This is what I call: Health as Wealth!

A Mid day Nap is actually only asking too little form your time.

I guess the study just emphasizes one thing:

Take Time To Relax To Live Long and Be Healthy!

The Importance of Flossing

March 3, 2007

2955575324.jpgPeriodontal disease is a very common condition among my diabetic patients.  It has been shown that severe periodontitis can affect 0.5% to 1.0% of the adult population, with as many as 80% of adult population having some form of periodontal disease.   It is therefore a must that care of our teeth and gums should start from the young especially with the recent finding of an association between teeth problem and the heart!

Several cohort and case-control studies have already shown that periodontitis is associated with endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.  Suggesting that inflammation of the gums can actually be a factor that can lead to long term damage to the heart as well.  As a result… now we know why Flossing is important as part of our daily oral hygiene.  By preventing gum and teeth problem, we can therefore reduce our risk for heart disease.

In a recent study published in March 1, 2007 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, this important showed that  “At six months, those subjects who had intensive treatment of the periodontitis, which included flossing…  was associated with reduced indexes of periodontal disease severity and significantly better endothelial function.”  The improvement was associated with lower levels of infllammatory markers which are markers also known to be associated with higher risk of heart disease. It is important to note that endothelial function is a marker of how healthy one’s heart and vessels are.  Any improvement in endothelial function means a good effect on the heart and the vessels.

As more information and studies have proven that heart disease is due to low grade inflammation… simple disease affecting the mouth which is easily preventable should therefore be addressed because low grade inflammation involving the gums and teeth can have a major impact in our risk for heart disease.

The Waist Twisting Disc: Another Gadget to Help Lose Weight

February 27, 2007

imagesdfghfgh.jpgI just discovered this gadget given to me by a pharmaceutical company which has been sitting on my bathroom floor together with my bathroom scale.  It’s actually an innocent looking small round disc shaped exercise gadget that can make you move in one place anywhere anytime.

This device is an innovative and a safe home fitness device that is made of a strong plastic platform that “allows you to produce an intensive rotating movement when standing on it.”  It allows you to move sideways without stressing your back.  It is small but actually durable enough to withstand our weight and still allows our whole body to move sideways freely.

It is suited for individuals who are lazy enough to change to a sports attire and drive to a gym.  Great for people who wants a home fitness equipment that can give one a great aerobic exercise program.   And since it is small and light weight, it can be carried inside a backpack and used anywhere, anytime!

I am now a great fan of this gadget.  I started using it during one rainy day and just missed my daily walking regimen.  So as not to give an excuse to not doing my routine, I grabbed my iPod, stepped on the disc and started twisting.  And to my amazement I enjoyed it without having to change my boxer shorts and “kamiseta”.   And to think, I was able to exercise even if it was raining outside.

I thought of writing about it after I’ve been doing this regimen for quite sometime.  I have to make sure it serves its purpose without giving me the muscle aches from the twisting that you have to do.  I do few twists in the morning with my sit-ups before I take a bath then my full routine in the afternoon alternating it with my walking exercise and swimming.  Again… no more excuses that it is raining or the usual excuse “that my knees hurt when I walk”….

Foods To Eat If You Have High Cholesterol

February 16, 2007

cholesterol.jpgMy previous post reviewed some principles regarding the kinds of fat we eat in the food.  Now to simplify further and for us to easily remember… let me enumerate the foods we allow our patients to eat if we see a high cholesterol level in the blood test.

Foods That Are Allowed:

  1. lean cuts of meat, chicken and fish
  2. skim, low fat milk, low fat yogourt
  3. for those who like eggs: the egg whites are okay
  4. olive, canola, sesame, soybean and safflower oils: 5-8 teaspoons /day only
  5. most breads, wheat bread, cereals, noodles
  6. fresh fruits
  7. plain popcorn, pretzels, tea and coffee.

Foods That You Can Eat Once In A While:

  1.  shellfish like tahong
  2. 2% fat milk, lite cream cheese
  3. 2 x /week of egg yolk
  4. nuts, avocados, seeds
  5. muffins, cornbread, biscuits
  6. homemade cakes and pies prepared with unsaturated fat

Definitely AVOID: Steaks, whole milk, whipped cream in your coffee, COCONUT OIL, coconut, vegetables that are prepared in BUTTER, ice cream, potato chips, buttered popcorn, frappes and floats, croissants, doughnuts, noodles prepared with cream ( yummy but sinful).

The choice of food is realy without limits.  But the option to eat the choices we are offered is up to us.  The need to discipline ourselves and know what is right and healthy depends on our determintation and willingness to know the difference .

My advise is:  You can still enjoy your steak BUT get the less fat cut!  Enjoy your popcorn while watching th movie but not the buttered one.  Enjoy your brewed coffee in the mall rather than the frapuccino with whipped cream!

Remember…

The Choice To Be Healthy Is Up To You!
