The Way To Live A Healthy Life…

February 12, 2007

1978699919.jpgI received this story by email… and I just have to post it in my blog so I can probably read it over and over again just to remind myself that there are really better ways to make this world a better place to live in. It’s a story that will realy make you feel good in times of bad news … and a lesson of a positive attitude that can lead us to a healthy and better life….

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: “When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?” The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. “I believe  that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.”
Then he told the following story:

Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, “Do you think they’ll let me play?”  Shay’s father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on  their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

Shay’s father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, “We’re losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I  guess he can be on our team and we’ll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.”Shay struggled over to the team’s bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in  his heart.

The boys saw the father’s joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay’s team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of  the ninth inning, Shay’s team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was schedule to be next at bat.At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win  the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn’t even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.  However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay’s life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make  contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground  ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.  Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman’s head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, “Shay, run to first! Run to first!” Never in his life had  Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.Everyone yelled, “Run to second, run to second!” Catching his breath, Shay  awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball … the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher’s intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman’s head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, “Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay” Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, “Run to third! Shay, run to third!” As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were  on their feet screaming, “Shay, run home! Run home!” Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

That day”, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, “the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world”.

Shay didn’t make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never  forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

A Great Story and a helpful reminder on how we can make a difference in this world.  It’s not a matter of who wins in what we do but how our attitudes have affected the lives of the many.  Its the legacy of living a fruitful life filled with the thought that your works continue to impact greatly the lives of others in a positive way that matters the most!

Living a Positive Attitude Means A Healthy Life!

A Family Vacation: A Great Way To Bond with Your Kids

December 31, 2006

This Christmas vacation, my wife and I decided to bring our kids to South Korea.  To explore what a cold place can offer.  playing-the-snow.JPGWe were there at the time when it was the coldest of the season which reminded me of my time while training in Minnesota.  For me… going out on a family trip is the best way to spend quality time with the kids since you are with them from the time they wake up, take a bath, eat breakfast up the time they sleep. No household help at all and the kids spend the whole day with us.

South Korea was a delight and a surprising find in terms of excitement and fun.  The kids loved the theme park Everland and the Lotte World Complex. lotte-world.JPG the-snow-buster.JPGBoth offered quality, entertaining and fun games, rides and shows. If you see the smiling faces of the kids and the contentment they express after the visit… then all the hard part of taking care of them is all worth it!  But I was really longing for my weekly massage now that am back home! Whew!

One does not need to go out of the country to spend quality time with the kids. Explore areas around you where interaction with your kids is the priority from day to night.  Bet you… you will feel the satisfaction even if tired and the fun even if  you feel wasted!

Indeed… A Family Vacation is worth it… even if you need another vacation afterwards!

This New Year….

How To Prevent Wrinkles….

December 21, 2006

2957708148.jpgBeauty is pretty expensive nowadays…it’s a booming business.  Medical tourism in our country is also being promoted as a future come on for consumers with special focus on cosmetic surgery.  While sorting out news reviews, I came accross this Consumer Report article which focused on beauty and anti wrinkle creams and I found it very interesting.  Let me highlight the important facts:

  1. There is no correlation between price and effectiveness in the wrinkle creams they tested.  In fact one of the cheapest — Olay Regenerist — performed slightly better than the more expensive ones.
  2. None of the tested brands produced dramatic results in terms of reducing wrinkles.
  3. Investigators found little relationship between the active ingredients in the products and their overall performance.

The report further noted that of all the creams tested, “at $57 for the cream, lotion, or serum, Olay Regenerist was the top performing product, followed by Lancome Paris Renergie, at $176, and RoC Retin-Ox+, at $135.”  To think, one of the most expensive creams in the market, La Praire Cellular sold at $335 for a ounce of day cream was one of the worst performing products.  It therefore shows that the price has little to do with effectiveness when it comes to antiaging skin products.

The study further substantiates the benefit of daily sunscreen which actually did more to prevent new wrinkles than any the more expensive and well marketed face creams on the market.  A very good news to the husbands indeed…..

Beauty does not need to be expensive after all…

When To Get A Second Opinion

December 18, 2006

6803703241.jpgWhether we’re talking about venturing into a new business, or looking for the best school for our kids… we tend to get somebody else opinion.  It is often said: Two heads are better then One!  The same is true for anybody’s health.  Seeking another doctor’s opinion should not be hard at all.  The problems lies when your doctor gets disappointed because you did not trust his diagnosis nor his management.  But the truth is… as true to our professional ethics… we value a second opinion and I encourage it!  If your physician gets angry because you sought somebody else idea then obviously he has something to hide and is unsure of what your problem is and what to do with it.  Then you definitely need another professional help!

I see a lot of patients coming to see me because they want a second opinion.  So I thought of sharing with you this nice compilation of reasons why you need to seek another opinion …tips fron the Washington University School of Medicine:

  • If your doctor has recommended surgery.
  • If your doctor’s diagnosis or recommendation doesn’t sound credible to you.
  • If your doctor diagnoses you with a condition that’s life-threatening.
  • If your doctor recommends an invasive procedure, when a less complicated procedure maybe available.
  • If you’ve been prescribed long-term medication.
  • If you’re not comfortable with the meds given.
  • If the medication is not making you feel better and
  • If your doctor can’t make a diagnosis.

Simple tips to help you decide whether or not to seek another doctor’s help or recommendation.  You can always go back to your primary doctor to make the final recommendation.  In fact if a patient seeks a second opinion, and he sees me back…it does not mean he trusts me less but rather now his trust for me gets better!

For Any Decisions in Life….

It’s Worth To Seek A Second Opinion!

Tips on Buying Safe Christmas Gifts

December 15, 2006

445278888.jpgMy wife and I are now busy distributing our Christmas gifts.  But mind you, it has been since early November that we have started scouting for the right gifts making sure they are right for the age of our godchildren.  It was not easy but it was fun!  But for those who are late shoppers and haven’t started wrapping gifts yet… I found this nice article on what are some of the safe gifts we can give this Christmas.

When picking up toys though … here are some simple reminders from the University Of Cinicinnati

  •  read product warnings and labels on toys;
  • avoid items with sharp edges and points;
  • look for sturdy construction;
  • quickly discard plastic wrappings after the toy is opened; and
  • keep older children’s toys away from younger siblings.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) offers the following age-appropriate guidelines for toys:

  • Newborns to age one: crib gyms, floor activity centers, activity quilts, squeaky toys, soft dolls or stuffed animals.
  • Ages one to three: soft blocks, large blocks, push and pull toys, books, pounding and shaping toys.
  • Ages three to five: nontoxic art supplies, pretend toys (i.e. play money, telephone), teddy bears or dolls, outdoor toys (i.e. tricycle and helmet).
  • Ages five to nine: arts and crafts kits, puppets, jump ropes, action figures, miniature dolls.
  • Ages nine to 14: handheld electronic games, board games, sports equipment with protective gear, model kits, musical instruments.

Those vulnerable to injuries from toys are children between the ages three to five years particularly to airway obstruction.  The kids of this age group have a tendency to explore things by putting them inside their mouths.  As a result choking was the cause of more than 90 percent of toy-related deaths in the United States in 2003.  Of these, toy balls and latex balloons were responsible for most of those deaths.  Buying toys for this age group therefore requires much thought to ensure the safety of the kids.

Remember, Christmas is a time to Celebrate and Enjoy…

Have a Safe Merry Christmas To All!

Enjoying Cape Town and The Safari…Malaria Free

December 10, 2006

with-nelson-mandela-and-pres-de-klerk.JPGOne of the top three places for me so far is Cape Town of South Africa.  The trip coincided with the 19th World Diabetes Congress held every 2 to3 years. A wonderful place to visit thanks to the former President Nelson Mandela whose biography is worth reading.  If not for his long battle against the apartheid… the freedom gained from his struggles now is bearing fruit for the country.  As a result… the country’s main income now comes from tourism.  And of course… a visit to the Safari is a must in South Africa.

In this part of the country… Cape Town has her own character and beauty.  It’s truly a paradise in the true sense of the word.  The Table Mountain is the landmark of Cape Town.  at-table-mountain-with-robben-island-at-the-back.JPGYour visit is not complete if you dont reach the top.  Unfortunately for some, the weather in South Africa changes every minute so that fog usually covers the most part of the mountain peak.  We were so fortunate that when we visited the place…the skies were crystal clear and the spectacular view was awesome.

The Cape Point is also a must see in this part of the world…cape-point.JPGtruly a magnificent view and breathtaking site!  ts the the tip of the African Continent.  On the way to the site the journey was likewise exciting with wonderful views of the harbour and bay along the stretch of the the Southern part of Africa.

The Safari of course was worth the visit… joust to get the feel of what a safari is all about. with-cheetah.JPG You get a close encounter with the Rhinoceros, the lion, the Spring Backs ( the country’s national animal) and of course our chance to sit beside the Cheetah.  The best part of the trip was the place being malaria free.

I idolize Nelson Mandela for what he did for South Africa…but after my visit to South Africa… I thank him for his struggles because now people from all over the world can now bear witness to his struggles where whites and blacks mingle and work together but most of all… the opportunity to enjoy the Paradise of South Africa.

South Africa…One of the Must- See Places To Visit!

Are Your Kids Watching Wrestling on TV?

December 1, 2006

Here in Cebu, we will be hosting the ASEAN summit and as a result schools will be closed for the holidays earlier.  So from Dec 8 onwards…it’s the start of a long vacation.  And from Dec 2 to 9, 23785211401.jpgmy wife and I will travel to explore South Africa…so while we’re away…our kids fortunately will be in school during the day but will be with their yayas in the afternoon.  And when these kids stay home…either they’re hooked to the computer or to the TV.  Unsupervised…we may wonder what these kids are up to.  So my son’s activities have been limited to just playing Jump Start series for Grade 1 and 2 and no internet in the computer while his TV time is also limited.  He’s into sports like soccer 3 x a week, swimming and taekwando once a week.

2410829857.jpgConcerns arise with the kinds of TV shows and the access to internet that our kids now have.  One such TV show that can have lasting impact on our kids is professional wrestling.  In a recent study published in August issue of Pediatrics , wrestling was shown to encourage aggressive behavior in teens to include violent tendencies and carrying of weapons when they date.  It was further noted that these violent tendencies are more pronounced in girls who watch more wrestling.

Other findings in the study that is really of concern to me as a parent that I want to share with other parents include:

The results suggest that violence begets violence:

  • the more these kids are exposed to violence on TV or other media like the internet, the more likelihood that these kids will also engage in violence.
  • 184753018.jpg“women are often degraded and appear as both the victims and instigators of violence. And this has a spillover effect for teens who watch wrestling.”

  • The wrestlers talk in derogatory terms… and kids have the tendency to follow!

  • The concept the kids understand is that watching violence on TV is acceptable and entertaining.

So while we’re away either at work or on vacation… we make sure our kids know what their limits are. Likewise we make sure our helpers know what they need to monitor but a disciplined child knows that too…

Make Sure You Know Well What You’re Kids Are Into Before It’s Too Late!

A Tip To Stay Trim

November 21, 2006

11502699.jpgDue to work overload, we simply put off the time to eat.  We always feel obliged to finish our work until such time we don’t realize that it’s past 2 in the afternoon and you start feeling jittery… simply because you’re hungry.  Once that happens…the urge to eat is so compelling that you tend to think of whatever simple flavor and fat rich food you can grab… probably the yummy fried chicken or the delicious cheese burger.

Shy away from that practice of indulging late lunch or dinner.  If you can find the time, eat small portion snacks in between meals.  Try to stay away from simple carbohydrates and eating plenty of fiber as this tip has been shown in one Danish study published in October in American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition to help women avoid packing on pounds as they get older.

When doctors talk of glycemic index- it actually a measure of how quickly a food causes blood sugar to rise.  Subsequently an rapid increase in blood sugar stimulates your pancreas to produce insulin which in turn can shut down the fat burning machine of the body.  High GI foods also make you feel hungry faster thus the craving for more food is always a turn off!

Examples of foods with high glycemic index which we recommend one to avoid includes: refined sugars and simple starches, like candy and white breadLow glycemic index foods include those with greater fiber content, such as vegetables and whole grains.

In our busy practice, we just dont find the time to look for what is healthy once we’re hungry.  So let me share with you one practical solution to the busy people out there trying to stay fit is to grab this low calorie low glycemic index snack cereal bar which I recommend to all my diabetics trying to lose weight.  You can put it inside your pouch or carry it with you when you’re on the road.  It was developed by Nestle for several years to come up with a healthy alternative to snacking called Nutren Balance.  It’s a low calorie cereal bar and oatmeal based so you don’t feel hungry fast.  You can also use it for meal replacement.  I usually tell my patients to grab for one anytime they feel hungry.

I am not advertising this product for a fee but am just sharing what I know works well with my patients to my readers.  Hope this will work for you too.

A Healthy and Stress-Free Way To Travel

November 17, 2006

616661748.jpgI’ve been away for 6 days… but this time travelling with my wife in a cruise was not only relaxing but likewise stress- free! This is the second time we’ve gone on a cruise together and I will always look forward to having one again in the future.  My other travels entail a lot of airplane and airport layovers… and if you travel to different places using the land either by bus or car… this will entail a lot of packing and unpacking which can in reality sometimes outweigh the fun of the travel itself!  So I strictly adhere to the principle that if I mean to travel to have fun…it should be fun!

This is the first time we had the Asia Cruise which brought us to Singapore then Penang Malaysia then to Phuket Thailand.  It was not the place but the fun and the experience while inside the ship.

In comparison to Land or Air travel-  The Cruise can offer healthy options while on board: You can rest easy in your comfy bed… then wake up to walk around the deck, enjoy the sun or take a swim or go to the gym before you eat breakfast at your own pace.  It’s healthy because… you get the right rest from a good night sleep and you get to exercise!  Just be careful with their buffets for breakfast , lunch and dinner…but my wife and I settled for the ala carte menus which stopped us from endulging in too much food!

Just got home not only relaxed but ready to work.  I hate those vacations where after the trip, you need to rest for few more days to recover!

If you feel stressed out or just want to travel… I would strongly recommend to travel in style stress free…and that would be the Cruise!

Star Cruise Virgo Cruise was not only fun but the handling of our luggages and the services were excellent.  354754932.jpg

We had a great balcony suite with a huge sliding door so anytime we can sit and enjoy the view of the sea and the sun….

In life…it is how you handle and appreciate little things in this world and enjoy them!

Please do check my other website… The Travel Rules Travelogue … where soon I’ll have more details of the Star Cruise for those interested in having one such relaxing trip.

Relaxed and Stress Relieved…Now Am Ready To Work!!!!

Beware of The Weight Loss Myth

November 6, 2006

1458670218.jpgIt is often said that losing weight is as difficult as maintaining weight.  It is therefore not surprising that out of frustration..maybe… that a lot of patients then resort to over the counter drugs, herbal supplements or even chinese teas just to lose weight.  It is for this reason that I thought of sharing with you a survey presented in the Annual Meeting of the Obesity Society in Boston this year.

In that survey, more than 60 percent of the 1,444 respondents, had misconceptions of weight loss drugs.  They mistakenly said that:

  •  such supplements have been tested and are proven to be safe (65 percent)
  • over the counter weight loss drugs are effective (63 percent).
  • Over half (54 percent) wrongly stated that such supplements are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

It is important to note that there are currently no over-the-counter drugs for weight loss approved by the FDA.  FDA approval of drugs require rigorous research and testing to prove the drugs are not only effective but also safe!  These supplements may have a label in them as “approved by FDA or BFAD in our country” AS SUPPLEMENTS and therefore are not required to test their drugs for safety and efficacy!

Be careful with misleading claims especially if they pertain to your health. A “claim all” drug too unrealistic to believe is not worth even a penny from your pocket!  The same advise I can give in those that are based solely on testimonials or publications in “throw away” journals most likely published by the same company that made the drugs!

Be Vigilant When It Comes to Drugs!

A Guide To Healthy Parenting

November 4, 2006

1012478201.jpgI just read this heart warming story about values formation in practice in a post… in Teaching Values.  And while reading the local papers yesterday, 2 teens returned nearly P200,000 they found while riding a bike.  I believe that a developing mind is critical to a child as well as our obligation as parents on teaching values… and what a way to have tested this trait than from the kids mouth of what being truthful is all about.  The bonding formed between the child and the parents is critical to acquiring these values.  And that I honestly believe… our kids will be kids for only a short time before they grow up and their time with us is merely borrowed that we need to utilize all we have with them to share and enjoy.  As a parent of 3 kids, I thought of sharing with you a survey done on what kids think about their parents and maybe we can all learn from it.  The information was sourced from Family Doctor  a website of the Academy of Family Physicians.

  • Most kids said their parents love them — big time. Nearly 90% of kids said their mom loves them a lot.
  • Far fewer kids — only 8% — said their mom only loved them some and 4% said their mom loved them a little or not at all.
  • When it came to dads, nearly 90% of kids said their dad loved them a lot.
  • Again, fewer kids (8%) said their dads loved them only some and another 8% said their dads loved them a little or not at all.
  • About 73% said they like doing stuff with both parents, while 12% preferred to spend time with mom only and 9% liked being only with dad.

Majority of parents seldom see our kids wake up and go to school.  But the 2 most likely times that we can spend quality times with our kids would be during meals and during school activities. In that same survey,

  • about half of kids said they have meals with their parents at least once a day. The rest of the kids said they have family meals a few days a week (28%) or hardly ever or never (19%).
  • Forty percent of kids said they’d like their parents to be more involved at their school. That could include chaperoning field trips, coaching a sport, volunteering for class events, or helping in tutoring.

Since I start work early so I can get home early too , my bonding time with my kids start around 5PM when it’s study time for my eldest kid and have fun learning together.  Literally…a fun bonding time with him.  It was a rewarding experience for me therefore when his name was posted in the bulletin board as first honors in the first quarter of his Grade 1 class!  It was an experience better than me getting a good grade.

Teaching values to the kids require time from us.  Again who is not busy these days but the outcome of all these hard-work we spend with our kids will soon make us realize that we are responsible for shaping the future of these kids… and being honest is one trait that will bring these kids to future success!

Kudos to Parents Who Spend Time With Their Kids!

Tips on How To Talk To Your Doctor

November 3, 2006

2777525239.jpgSetting up an appointment to see a doctor can be a daunting task for some. Many patients will tell me that their blood pressure usually shoots up the moment they enter the office. Many times, its the thought of missing something that they really want to ask…or may not understand.  So I thought of writing these tips so you can be prepared to see us anytime you deemed necessary.

  • Personal information like allergy or are you stressed?
  • Any family or past illnesses or surgery.
  • Any medicines you are currently taking.  Make sure you can remember the names and strength.
  • Any side effects you experienced while taking the medicine(s).  To include any vitamins or supplements you take.
  • Any laboratory workups done  including Xrays.

When you are inside the doctor’s office…don’t be afraid to speak up. It’s important for you to let your doctor know if you don’t understand something.

  • Ask every time you don’t understand something.
  • Write down your questions ahead of time.
  • React and ask for explanations if you missed something
  • Ask what the drugs are for and what the expected side effects are and for how long will they be taken.

Remember the following Important Points:Understanding ones disease is key to helping you feel better and managing your disease. These are the times you should call us:

  • Never stop a drug if you were not told to stop or if in doubt… ask your doctor.
  • If you start to feel worse or have problems with your medicine…call your doctor.
  • If you had tests and haven’t gotten the results… call your doctor

Lastly…know when your next check up is.  Remember… as doctors we want to know if the drug we’re giving is working well to help you feel better.  A follow up visit is very essential to help us manage your disease better!

Learning A Lesson From the Movie CLICK!

October 12, 2006

imagesfghj.jpgOnes desire to succeed in career is healthy as long as ones personal health and family life are kept a PRIORITY!

One movie I found surprisingly good was the movie CLICK that I happened to see while on the plane back to the Philippines.  This is a movie that tells about a workaholic advertising executive Michael Newman played by the comedian Adam Sandler who came across an eccentric salesman who offered him a universal remote control that controlled his life.  The remote control eventually overruled his choices that went fast forward to his desires in the future… to the point that he saw his future being overruled by selfish desires to succeed in his career to the point of neglecting his family resulting in divorce and poor family relationships.  The worst things he regretted were not having the time to spend supervising his kids while growing up, no time for his loving wife and not having the time to spend with his father.  He regretted not having the time to even say and express his love to his family!

I definitely recommend everyone to watch this movie… anyone who may have wandered in path and have put more time in career than personal life…to the point of putting ones personal health and family life as nothing more than supporting roles.

My brother in law’s personal motto says it all:

I maybe a learned scholar, a succesful business man or a good father and husband…but until I am all three…I am not successful”

Lessons Learned While in Copenhagen

September 19, 2006

Just came back from the convention in Denmark where a lot of good things came p9140651.JPGout especialy regarding prevention of diabetes and its progression (aside from the sightseeing tour we had…like this little mermaid of Hans Christian Anderson’s famous tale). We all know about lifestyle changes as the best way to prevent the diseases but now an early mild form of abnormality in blood sugar has been shown to be prevented from progressing to a more serious form using medication.  The so called DREAM study was one highlight in the convention and the result of which will definitely have an impact on how we approach and treat mild forms of diabetes.

I believe Copenhagen was the best place to have this study presented because this is a place that is inhabited by beautiful people that  are physically fit. They go to work using their bikes. p9160713.JPGThey have their own bike lanes and parking area.  Likewise, Copenhagen as a city also is small enough that everything can be reached by foot or by bicycle. As a result seldom do I see obese individuals. This place tells us that being physically mobile can mean economic savings: no need to buy cars and gasoline, and by being physically healthy therefore results in less risk to suffer from diabetes and lifestyle diseases.

p9140639.JPGI believe the concept of biking as a means of transportation is feasible in our city. This will result in less polution and therefore less respiratory diseases like asthma, more benefits can be derived from this policy and a very good way to help curb obesity that is now prevalent in our region.  Look at how the Danish people are already dressed for work and using their bikes to get them to places of work.

Few days in Copenhagen have been very fruitful…learned new things both scientifically and learned best by observing how the people live and practice their way of life.

Tired Of Your Low Back Pain? Try The Acupuncture!

September 8, 2006

imagesqwe.jpgChronic Back Pain is considered one of the frequent reasons for doctor’s visits. The word chronic in itself tells us that majority of these complaints remain as back pains for a long time with transient relief of symptoms in between.  This is one setting in our medical practice where patients then resort to alternative medicine.

One of these alternative routes of therapy is acupuncture.  Before I left the Mayo Clinic after my fellowship, the center was setting up an Acupuncture Unit for research into this ancient Chinese way of treating diseases.  The mere fact there’s an interest in doing studies means there’s truth to the curative aspects of acupuncture that needs to be studied thoroughly to be accepted in the Western world.

imagesdfghj1.jpgNow comes the largest study to date of acupuncture for chronic low back pain published in the Sept 1 issue of American Journal of Epidemiology. The study looked at whether acupuncture can ease the pain, and improve back function and involved around 11,630 patients with chronic low back pain. Patients received up to 15 treatments over a three-month period, and were followed for an additional three months.

The Findings seem promising:

1. Accupunctrue treated patients showed significantly better back function: 52.6 percent responded to treatment while

2. Non acupuncture treated patients: only 26.8 percent responded to treatment.

3. Those who initially did not receive acupuncture then later were given the treatment had similar equal response in terms of relief of pain.

4. The relief of pain persisted up to 6 months after acupuncture treatment.

A safe alternative approach to back pain especially if conventional forms of therapy have so far not offered any relief.  Finding a good practitioner however can be a challenge! But if you find one.. I would say… Go for it!

The Social Impact of Wanting A Baby Boy

September 6, 2006

imagesdfghhj.jpgChinese tradition calls it that the first born be a boy…. however recent studies have shown that cultures that favour male babies may result in a surplus of men. It is theorized that once this happens these men will struggle to find sexual partners and could find themselves marginalised in society based on t he findings of a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by the University College London.

The social impact is intriguing and let me quote what the paper emphasized as the possible implication of this practice:

“As more men discover their lack of marriage prospects, this could lead to antisocial behaviour, violence and possibly more opportunities for organised crime and terrorism, threatening the stability and security of many societies.”

Likewise as quoted from Dr Therese Hesketh, of the UCL Institute of Child Health:

“The ratio of men to women in most populations is remarkably constant if left untouched. The tradition of son preference, however, has distorted these natural sex ratios in large parts of Asia and North Africa. Sex-selective abortion and discrimination in care practices for girls have led to higher female mortality. Although health care for women is generally improving, these advances have been offset by a huge increase in the use of sex-selective abortion, and there are now an estimated 80 million missing females in India and China alone.”

Over the next 20 years, in parts of China and India there will be a 12 to 15 per cent excess of young men. These men will remain single and will be unable to have families, in societies where marriage is regarded as virtually universal and social status and acceptance depend, in large part, on being married and creating a new family.”

“This trend could lead to increased levels of antisocial behaviour and violence, as gender is a well-established correlate of crime, and especially violent crime. Gender-related violent crime is consistent across cultures. Furthermore, when single young men congregate, the potential for more organised aggression is likely to increase substantially, and this has worrying implications for organised crime and terrorism.”

The above scenario is pretty worrisome indeed.  But apparently certain measures with regard to sex preference have been made in terms of educating the public with some progress. In a recent national survey, 37 per cent of Chinese women surveyed claimed to have no gender preference, and 45 per cent said the ideal family consisted of one boy and one girl. Almost equal numbers of the women expressed a preference for one girl as for one boy.

So there you go… to the newly married…No sex preference please….

Just for fun…let me do a quick survey… of  my friends and readers who are getting married or are going to have a baby… How many would prefer having a baby boy versus a baby girl?

Being SINGLE Can Be Bad For Your Health

August 24, 2006

671582262.jpgThe September Issue of the Journal of Epidemiology revealed an amazing fact. It is often believed that staying with friends or having friends or being with somebody you love makes a dull day bright!

Several research studies have already been done looking at longer life spans and lesser heart diseases among happily married couples. But this is the first study done at University of California that I know of,  that looked at singleblessedness and decreased life span.

THE FINDINGS:

1. A 58% increase in death rate among single persons versus those who are married.

2. Unmarried persons whether divorced, separated or widowed had higher death rate.

3.The effect was STRONGEST among those NEVER MARRIED and more pronounced in men than in women.

Practical Implication of the study in our decision making:

Being unmarried is a high risk condition. In fact it was assessed that… the risk of being unmarried is similar to ones risk if he has high blood pressure or high cholesterol and the risk of death!

*Does this mean married couples lead happier lives? Or live  healthier lives because of the children or because they want more happier years together that they live healthier lives? OR

*Do you think being single equates to being lonely and less health conscious? …. What do you think?

As the saying goes…

The Happier You Are…The Longer You Live!

The Need to Educate Our Patients…Why Health is Wealth!

August 7, 2006

2007039828 One very common question I get from new patients that have been diabetic for years is whether it is really necessary to check their blood glucoses.  From the time I get this question, one thing I know is that this patient has never received any education regarding his disease.

All too common scenario that’s very frustrating.  Because by the time these patients see me… most likely complications arising from poor diabetes control have already set it.

Knowledge of ones disease…why you have it…what to do about it…how can we prevent the next problems to come… is more important than starting medications. All too familiar with some doctors is the reflex to start medications to treat the disease.  But the more lasting prescription that will do the trick of educating these people is left unsaid.

If one knows what this disease can do to ones life and that something can be done about it and how… will have more lasting impact and solution to the problem itself.  I may take time to educate patients but it’s worth it.  You see the results and they see the great results on their sugar level.  To see the smiles on their faces, how great they feel and the fact that they have done something to reduce their risk to suffer from complications like heart disease or stroke… is more rewarding that anything else.

I guess the beauty of being a physician are the complements you get from your patients too happy to see you back and too happy to refer their friends to you.

Learn more about your health…the rewards will be more than your wealth!

An Update On Virgin Coconut Oil

August 2, 2006

Go to fullsize image Much have been said about virgin coconut oil… you read them on newspapers, you hear great testimonies about its health benefits on radios and TV!  But what really is this oil…and the truth behind the claims regarding the therapeutic value.  If you log on to Google… it will link you to 1,400,000 sites!!!

According to some websites…”the oil comes from coconut trees that are grown organic… rich in lauric acid.” Because of the process , apparently the oil contains no trans fatty acid. It further claims “Research shows that the medium chain fatty acids found in coconut oil boosts the body’s metabolism, raises body temperatures, and helps provide greater energy which can lead to weight loss.

What’s more interesting are the health related claims : oil to contain antifungal, antiviral including anti HIV and antimicrobial properties.  Likewise promoted to affect gastrointestinal problems, even as treatment for hypothyroidism and improves chronic fatigue syndrome. And the websites have lots of testimonials rather than true research oriented materials acceptable to the medical societies.

Therefore the claims of this oil can’t be verified to warrant my recommendation with similar precautions to other herbal products being marketed as cure-all remedies.

Recently the US FDA posted in their web site demanding these coconut oil websites to stop their marketing practices of the products…

The therapeutic claims on your web site establish that the products are drugs because they are intended for use in the cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease. The marketing of these products with these claims violates the Act section 201 (g)(1)(B) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act ( 21 USC 321(g)(1)(b)) .

Furthermore, your products are not generally recognized as safe and effective for the above referenced conditions and therefore, the products are also “new drugs” under section 201(p) of the Act [21 U.S.C. 321(p)]

FDA approves a new drug on the basis of scientific data submitted by a drug sponsor to demonstrate that the drug is safe and effective. Your products are also misbranded within the meaning of section 502(f)(1) of the Act, in that the labeling for these drugs fails to bear adequate directions for use [21 U.S.C. 352(f)(1)].

Can Alcohol Cause Obesity?

August 1, 2006

115026991.jpg

A common question that I get is the relationship between aclcohol and the risk to become obese.  Can drinking alchol increase once belly?

The results came from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III involving 8000 patients published in December 2005.

  • Current alcohol drinkers who drank one or two glasses regularly but less than 5 drinks per week were significantly less likely to be obese than non drinkers and heavy drinkers.
  • Consuming more than 4 drinks or more per day increased the drinker’s risk to be obese by 46%.

The mechanism however of the protective effect of alcohol is not known.

This result does not recommend non drinkers to drink to reduce ones risk to become obese but rather argues against a strategy of promoting complete abstention for those who regularly consume alcohol.

My recommendation if you drink… studies have shown that red wine has the advantage because of the flavanoid content like dark chocolate…

But as what we have recommended before…

Anything In Excess Is A Waste…
