Is Advil Safe? Know The Facts!

January 4, 2007

39985664971.jpgOne of the most commonly used and prescribed medications over the counter are the pain relievers.  And one of the most marketed pain relievers is Advil. We take them when we have headache, toothache, joint pains or back aches.  People from all ages and all walks of life cant live without the pain relievers to help us alleviate the symptoms and make us be more active.  But recent controversies came up with the pulling out from the market of the most prescribed OTC med- a brand of Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Agent or NSAIDs jolted the medical community as well as the consumers.  We still continue to have safe OTC pain relievers but before buying or using one I thought of sharing with you some of the common considerations you have to do before using one:

  • Do not use them for more than 10 days.
  • Know the side effects which include gastric ulcers and allergic reactions.  Recently cardiovascular complications were noted especially if taken daily for a long time.
  • Most NSAIDs are present in other OTC products like colds and the flu medicines.
  • Be careful if you have either a kidney or liver disease.   If you need to take one then use the alternatives to NSAIDs like Tylenol (acetaminophen.)
  • Other non medical alternatives include physical therapy, biofeedback, yoga, meditation, and acupuncture can also reduce their pain.
  • Most importantly… if you have joint pains and overweight… weight loss is the key!
  • Do not mix these meds with alcohol since once risk for stomach bleeding is increased with just 1 drink per week.
  • All NSAIDs have the potential to raise high blood pressure.  So talk to your doctor if you have high blood pressure.

My advise is simple:OTC pain relievers are safe as long as we take them short term like 2-3 days or occasionally because of headache or toothache.  If you have to take them daily for any reason then take it for 2-3 days then stop for few days before taking them again.

Start Right After The Holidays: Tips To Prevent Weight Gain

January 2, 2007

3489305539.jpgThese post holiday blues… feeling guilty for having eaten too much and having gained a few more pounds… let me share with you some simple facts and tips from the American Academy of Family Physicians as to why we become overweight and what to do to help us shed those few pounds we’ve gained during the holidays.

  • Reasons Why We Become Overweight:

    • Eating when you’re lonely, sad, bored or stressed.
    • Eating because you feel pressured by friends or family to eat.
    • Using food for recreation, or eating just because food is available.
    • Taking medicine that makes you feel hungry.
    • Having hormone problems that slow your metabolism (how fast your body burns calories).

    Tips For a Healthy Lifestyle:

    • Eat breakfast.
    • Eat your biggest meal of the day at lunchtime.
    • Begin meals with a low-fat salad, soup, broth or a glass of water.
    • Eat more vegetables and whole grains at each meal.
    • Drink fewer sugar-sweetened beverages (such as regular soda and fruit juice).
    • If you drink more than one regular soda per day, replace one of them with a diet soda, water or skim milk.
    • Limit your alcohol intake.
    • Know what 1 portion looks like — and stick to it.
    • Eat slowly so your body has time to know when you are full.
    • Be more active in your daily life.
    • Replace some of the sugar in your diet with non-caloric sweeteners
    • Get support from family and friends. Support is very important for long-term success in adopting healthy habits.

When To Get A Second Opinion

    December 18, 2006

6803703241.jpgWhether we’re talking about venturing into a new business, or looking for the best school for our kids… we tend to get somebody else opinion.  It is often said: Two heads are better then One!  The same is true for anybody’s health.  Seeking another doctor’s opinion should not be hard at all.  The problems lies when your doctor gets disappointed because you did not trust his diagnosis nor his management.  But the truth is… as true to our professional ethics… we value a second opinion and I encourage it!  If your physician gets angry because you sought somebody else idea then obviously he has something to hide and is unsure of what your problem is and what to do with it.  Then you definitely need another professional help!

I see a lot of patients coming to see me because they want a second opinion.  So I thought of sharing with you this nice compilation of reasons why you need to seek another opinion …tips fron the Washington University School of Medicine:

    • If your doctor has recommended surgery.
    • If your doctor’s diagnosis or recommendation doesn’t sound credible to you.
    • If your doctor diagnoses you with a condition that’s life-threatening.
    • If your doctor recommends an invasive procedure, when a less complicated procedure maybe available.
    • If you’ve been prescribed long-term medication.
    • If you’re not comfortable with the meds given.
    • If the medication is not making you feel better and
    • If your doctor can’t make a diagnosis.

Simple tips to help you decide whether or not to seek another doctor’s help or recommendation.  You can always go back to your primary doctor to make the final recommendation.  In fact if a patient seeks a second opinion, and he sees me back…it does not mean he trusts me less but rather now his trust for me gets better!

    For Any Decisions in Life….

It’s Worth To Seek A Second Opinion!

Why It’s Healthy To Be Cool: Why Anger Can Kill!

    November 24, 2006

305336650.jpgDriving well in the Philippines takes courage, expertise and coolness.  One can’t miss a day without somebody cutting you off in traffic without regard to safety.  We hear stories about fights due to parking and even to the point of murder due to the lack of “COOLNESS…” We have workers in our workplace or household helpers that can be triggers of our anger.

But the next time somebody or something bad triggers a reaction of ANGER… think and pause for a moment and contemplate on what scientific studies have shown.

A recent review done by Harvard researchers concluded that literally… “Anger Can Brake Ones Heart.” It is estimated that being angry is synonymous to putting ones heart at 3x the risk of developing heart attack and 14 fold increase in risk of stroke.

An interesting study by researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine on anger showed that after tracking 1,055 medical students for 36 years, ” the hotheads were six times more likely to suffer heart attacks by age 55 and three times more likely to develop any form of heart or blood vessel disease than the cooler heads.”

I am sure you know of friends or relatives that being angryis already part of their daily lives.  It may be their natural reaction to something that irritates them.  These are the people that may require some help.  The Harvard researchers recently found as published in Harvard Mens Health Watch, September issue, that a single low-dose (81 mg) pill can reduce anger-caused heart attacks by 40 percent. In other words, a daily aspirin may cut the risk of breaking an angry heart by almost half.  Do you need Aspirin?  Your own family doctor can advise you better.

So the next time something stresses you out or somebody irritates you…think twice before you act…

    Protect Your Heart… Be COOL!

    A Tip To Stay Trim

    November 21, 2006

11502699.jpgDue to work overload, we simply put off the time to eat.  We always feel obliged to finish our work until such time we don’t realize that it’s past 2 in the afternoon and you start feeling jittery… simply because you’re hungry.  Once that happens…the urge to eat is so compelling that you tend to think of whatever simple flavor and fat rich food you can grab… probably the yummy fried chicken or the delicious cheese burger.

Shy away from that practice of indulging late lunch or dinner.  If you can find the time, eat small portion snacks in between meals.  Try to stay away from simple carbohydrates and eating plenty of fiber as this tip has been shown in one Danish study published in October in American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition to help women avoid packing on pounds as they get older.

When doctors talk of glycemic index- it actually a measure of how quickly a food causes blood sugar to rise.  Subsequently an rapid increase in blood sugar stimulates your pancreas to produce insulin which in turn can shut down the fat burning machine of the body.  High GI foods also make you feel hungry faster thus the craving for more food is always a turn off!

Examples of foods with high glycemic index which we recommend one to avoid includes: refined sugars and simple starches, like candy and white breadLow glycemic index foods include those with greater fiber content, such as vegetables and whole grains.

In our busy practice, we just dont find the time to look for what is healthy once we’re hungry.  So let me share with you one practical solution to the busy people out there trying to stay fit is to grab this low calorie low glycemic index snack cereal bar which I recommend to all my diabetics trying to lose weight.  You can put it inside your pouch or carry it with you when you’re on the road.  It was developed by Nestle for several years to come up with a healthy alternative to snacking called Nutren Balance.  It’s a low calorie cereal bar and oatmeal based so you don’t feel hungry fast.  You can also use it for meal replacement.  I usually tell my patients to grab for one anytime they feel hungry.

I am not advertising this product for a fee but am just sharing what I know works well with my patients to my readers.  Hope this will work for you too.

A Healthy and Stress-Free Way To Travel

    November 17, 2006

616661748.jpgI’ve been away for 6 days… but this time travelling with my wife in a cruise was not only relaxing but likewise stress- free! This is the second time we’ve gone on a cruise together and I will always look forward to having one again in the future.  My other travels entail a lot of airplane and airport layovers… and if you travel to different places using the land either by bus or car… this will entail a lot of packing and unpacking which can in reality sometimes outweigh the fun of the travel itself!  So I strictly adhere to the principle that if I mean to travel to have fun…it should be fun!

This is the first time we had the Asia Cruise which brought us to Singapore then Penang Malaysia then to Phuket Thailand.  It was not the place but the fun and the experience while inside the ship.

In comparison to Land or Air travel-  The Cruise can offer healthy options while on board: You can rest easy in your comfy bed… then wake up to walk around the deck, enjoy the sun or take a swim or go to the gym before you eat breakfast at your own pace.  It’s healthy because… you get the right rest from a good night sleep and you get to exercise!  Just be careful with their buffets for breakfast , lunch and dinner…but my wife and I settled for the ala carte menus which stopped us from endulging in too much food!

Just got home not only relaxed but ready to work.  I hate those vacations where after the trip, you need to rest for few more days to recover!

If you feel stressed out or just want to travel… I would strongly recommend to travel in style stress free…and that would be the Cruise!

Star Cruise Virgo Cruise was not only fun but the handling of our luggages and the services were excellent.  354754932.jpg

We had a great balcony suite with a huge sliding door so anytime we can sit and enjoy the view of the sea and the sun….

In life…it is how you handle and appreciate little things in this world and enjoy them!

Please do check my other website… The Travel Rules Travelogue … where soon I’ll have more details of the Star Cruise for those interested in having one such relaxing trip.

Healthy Food Tips For The Family

    November 7, 2006

29874014331.jpgI came accross this simple regimen to our life long struggle to find better ways to serve best foods for the family.  “Struggles with food and obesity frequently start in childhood” and therefore addressing these early results in long term gains.

Here’s some pointers from the Johns Hopkins University Bayview Medical Center.

“Here are some ways you can help your child avoid a weight problem:

    • Never put your child on a low-calorie deprivation diet. You can lower dietary fat, but maintain calories by increasing the consumption of fruit, vegetables, cereals, and breads.
    • Children who eat full meals do better nutritionally than children who merely snack. Your child should come to the table hungry, learn how to control hunger, and wait for his meal to be served.
    • Remove snack temptations around the house.
    • Don’t use desserts and sweets as rewards.
    • Have family meals, and set a good example by eating a wide variety of foods.
    • Make mealtime pleasant. Don’t use this time for criticizing and scolding. ”

Simple… Common sense… but take note of them for they may help you…

    Build better and healthier families

An Easy Way To Avoid The Common Cold

    November 2, 2006

15112982.jpgIt’s the “colds” season again. The rainy season factor in the increasing trend of people catching colds. The problem with colds is that it is highly contagious and the virus is airborne and stays in the air for quite sometime to infect other people.  We are always told to cover out noses when we sneeze and definitely to wash hands when handling objects not ours or just by touching door knobs.  It can be also transmitted by a simple handshake.  So my practice has always been to have a hand sanitizer on my side and use it to clean my hands after every patient that I see and touch.

A new study published in November issue of the American Journal of Medicine showed that moderate daily exercise can actually help fend off the common cold. We know being physically healthy can really boost one immune system but this is the first time that exercise per se is looked at in relation to preventing colds.

In that study “older women who walked for a half-hour daily for a year reported half the number of colds as women of similar age who didn’t exercise.” The Fifty-three of the women were assigned to the exercise group spent 30 minutes daily, five days a week, doing moderate-intensity activity like brisk walking. These are activities we can always do at home.

This adds to the long list of benefits we get from exercise….

If You Are At Risk For Diabetes: Lessen Your STRESS!

    October 30, 2006

1321931401.jpgThat’s True: Stress can increase ones blood sugar through the effect of the so called stress hormones.  You may have friends or parents who when gets stressed have higher sugar values.  But Can Stress cause one to become a diabetic?

One study says YES!….In this study published in October issue of Psychosomatic Medicine showed that individuals with high stress and high hostility levels have a higher likelihood of developing insulin resistance.

Insulin Resistance is the main defect present among diabetic patients.  This is a state where our body’s insulin production is affected because our body does not interact with the insulin being produced.  If this state remains unabated… it will tire out the pancreas which is the organ responsible for producing insulin leading to its failure to produce the product.  Once this happens, your blood sugar then shoots up because there is no more enough insulin that can bring sugar inside the muscle.  Our thrust in the treatment therefore of diabetes in 2006 is to combat this insulin resistance state through increase physical activity or drugs.

This study found that there is a statistical interaction between hostility and stress level in predicting insulin resistance. Likewise other components associated with hostility like cynicism was found to strongly increase insulin resistance.  And one preventive strategy therefore for those of us at risk of diabetes  aside from increase physical activity should now include stress management.

At Risk for Diabetes?…embrace this saying… This has been and will always be my motto in life:

    LIFE IS TOO SHORT… Enjoy!

Don’t Let Stress Take that away from you! Know what stresses You Out…Then

… Know How to Handle The Stress…

    For A Better Sex Life…

    October 21, 2006

1953191542.jpgThis post is for the guys…and their partners too! A Hope for Premature Ejaculation!

Do you know that premature ejaculation is the most common sexual problem among men?  Even more common that erectile dysfunction or impotence? It affects approximately 35% of male population…whew that large! Seldom however is this topic ever discussed because most men don’t think this as a problem but the partners actually do….But there’s hope …

A new antidepressant drug called dapoxetine designed specifically to treat premature ejaculation has proven to be safe and effective in a study involving 2000 men published in September issue of Lancet.

This drug works specifically to delay ejaculation. But, continued use of this drug has been shown to produce some side effects like nausea, headache among others.  “It worked both in lengthening ejaculation time and in patients’ feeling control over ejaculation and both subjects’ and partners’ feelings of satisfaction with intercourse”

The results showed that after 12 weeks, men taking dapoxetine increased their time to ejaculation from less than 1 minute to 2.78 minutes on the 30-milligram dose ,  to 3.32 minutes on the 60-milligram dose.  That a great improvement and for sure makes the men less insecure in bed.

This drug is available in Europe but not yet approved in the US.  So for now…the use of depoxitine for premature ejaculation is considered an ” off label” use.

    There you go guys…

No Baby Yet?… Check Your Husband’s Weight

    October 16, 2006

imageswer1.jpgInfertility is pretty common nowadays…being blamed includes stress, pollution or just having no luck!  Almost always in general, it is blamed on the woman for not having the right” ground” for conceiving.  However only recently is a study done by a reputable institution, The National Institutes of Health, that looked at the men as being the reason for the infertility.  The study published in the September 2006 issue of Epidemiology,  showed men with increased body mass index (BMI) were significantly more likely to be infertile than normal-weight men.  BMI which is computed based on a person’s weight and height, provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people.

It has been known that women who are obese have a difficult time getting pregnant however no data on infertility are known among obese men.

    This new study showed that:

    • A 20-pound increase in men’s weight can increase the chance of infertility by about 10 percent.
    • Men’s BMI was an independent risk factor for infertility. This after adjusting for other known risk factors like cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, and solvent and pesticide exposure.
    • There was a general increase in infertility with increased BMI: reaching a nearly 2-fold increase among obese men.

The most likely explanations for infertility among obese men included:

    • Overweight men usually have less sexual intercourse than their normal weight counterparts and this could influence fertility.
    • Recent studies showed lower semen quality for overweight and obese men, as well as hormonal differences.

This study further illustrates another impact of obesity on ones health… this time on infertility which can be frustrating to the couples trying to have a baby.  Whether achieving a normal BMI among those participants in the study can result in normal fertility remains to be seen… although medically, once a person who is obese loses weight… the medical problems associated with it returns to baseline average population risk.

So Guys… Careful with Your Weight Or Else…

Four Short Walks is Better for High Blood Pressure

    October 13, 2006

135780823.jpgDay to day, we take the same route in our lives… from the time we wake up , go to work then come home to spend time with our family.  Sometimes… we even complain that we have no time to spend an evening dinner with our kids…how much more to exercise.  However, whatever we do in life… personal health is a matter of committment rather than choice!

Prehypertension is defined as a blood pressure of 120/80 to 130/89 mmHg.  This level is no longer considered normal.  This level is a red flag that if one does not care enough to be healthy… then you’re doomed to suffer later on in life as this can lead to heart attack and strokes.  But just like prediabetes or high cholesterol… we can do something about it as long as we care.

So here’s an exciting study to prove that we definitely have time to do something in our lives that will matter most to our health.  This study published in the Journal of Hypertension this September showed that taking four short walks a day to lower your blood pressure may be more effective than one long walk.

The effect of four 10-minute walks was compared to one 40-minute walk in reducing blood pressure in 20 people with prehypertension.  The result was rather interesting because those that did the short walks decreased their blood pressure by the same amount, the effect of which lasted for 11 hours, compared to only seven hours after the long walk.

This result maybe true to the effect of short bouts of activity in the whole spectrum of other diseases like diabetes and cholesterol problems.  Now you cant say..” I dont exercise because I dont have time to go to a gym”.

My Tip is for one to do your morning ritual of any activity for 10 minutes then do it again by lunch and by the time you take your afternoon snacks and then do the 10 minute walk to home. Once you’ve made this routine…it’s now part of your lifestyle.

Four Short Walks Can Mean A Lot To You and Your Health!

Be Careful…Flu Spreads with Air Travel

    October 3, 2006

images.jpgWhether you’re in business or leisure, air travel has been part the way to get things done.  As an educator and clinician, air tavel has always been a way of updating myself in the ever changing medical field. This time, Ill be traveling again to attend the World Insulin Resistance Meeting in Las Vegas and then proceed to San Francisco for the annual Clinical Endocrinology Update.  This will definitely entail a lot of air travel and again the possibility of catching air infection like flu.  .

In a study done by the group from Harvard- and MIT , published in the Public Library of Science- Medicine, the researchers concluded that indeed flu spreads easily during air travel.  When air traffic fell after the Sept. 11 attacks, this resulted in a drop in the number of people flying internationally and fell by around 27 percent.

Looking at data from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the years between 1996 and 2005, they noticed that the 2001-2002 flu season was highly aberrant: there was a delay in the peaking of flu season as well as a delay in the apparent spread of the flu season across the US.  The data suggest the impact of the change in the air traffic due to the drop in passengers after the September 11 attacks.  However in regions where there was no flight restrictions like France, there was no delay in flu activity during the 2001-2002 flu season.

“The more domestic travel, the faster the spread of flu, and the more inbound international travel, the earlier the influenza season begins.”

With the rainy season therefore, it is expected that the rate of flu infection will increase.  I therefore advise travelers to be more cautious especially if your seatmate starts sneezing and coughing.   It is also important to note that influenza is caused by a variety of viruses and usually the mix changes slightly from year to year thus flu vaccine is given yearly.  Likewise I recommend that flu vaccine should be given to all after the age of 50 and those with chronic illnesses like Diabetes and Heart Disease.  People whose daily activities require meeting people that entails a lot of hand shaking and document exchanges should also get vaccinated.

The best way however to avoid Flu in our day to day lives is plain and simple: FREQUENT HADWASHING… specifically to avoid spreading and catching the bug!

    Enjoy Air Travel… Get Vaccinated!

How To Get The Vitamins By Eating The Right FOOD

    September 21, 2006

1252098707.jpgIf you eat a proper balanced diet, there’s really no need to take any vitamins because these nutrients are present in most foods that we eat. We already know that fruits and vegetables are considered essential servings to our daily meal plan.  Now a large study has confrimed that most nutrients that we need can be taken in by eating these vegetables.

People who consume plenty of salads, or raw vegetables like carrots, cauliflower are more likely to take in sufficient amounts of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins that is 15% higher than those who dont eat vegetables.  Likwise vegetable eaters were more likely to meet the daily requirement for Vitamin C.

The study published in The September issue of The American Dietetic Association Journal found that even one serving of raw vegetables a day is sufficient to getting the recommended amounts of vitamins A, E, B6 and folic acid. Meaning the more raw vegetables you take in, better levels of the vitamins C and E, folic acid and several carotenoids will be seen in your blood.

One important point to remember though is that Water-soluble vitamins, like vitamin C and many B vitamins, are heat-sensitive, and therefore it’s better to get them through eating raw vegetables.   But antioxidants: carotenoids, tend to be better absorbed if vegetables are cooked.

How many of us take salads before the main meal?  Now we know we’re doing the right thing in keeping ourselves fit and healthy!

Air Fresheners and Your Lung May be A Bad Combination

    September 11, 2006

23863564961.jpgAir fresheners are a commonplace in our cars. Unknowingly we may be damaging our lungs in the process.  What this new research has found is that the same chemical compounds that are used in air fresheners can also be found in toilet bowl cleaners as well as mothballs.

The study done by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), a part of the National Institutes of Health, published in the August issue of Environmental Health Perspectives showed that this compound called 1,4 dichlorobenzene (1,4 DCB) can cause modest reductions in lung function.

    The Findings included:

    1.  Of the different compounds emitted as gases, only the compound 1,4 DCB was associated with reduced pulmonary function.  This compound is the one used in most of our household products inlcuding room deodorizers, urinal and toilet bowl blocks, and as an insecticide fumigant for moth control.

    2. A 4 percent decrease in the test which measures forced expiratory volume in 1(FEV1) second between the highest and lowest levels of exposure. FEV1 is a pulmonary function test that is a commonly used index for assessing airway function and obstruction.

This research data suggest that 1,4-DCB may exacerbate respiratory diseases.  As such, a decline in lung function no matter how small may be a big factor among patients especially our children who already have allergic cough or asthma. Chronic exposure of this substance can definitely result in harmful effect to their lungs.

Therefore, if you plan to stay indoor for the day…make sure you avoid any deodorizing agents in cleaning your house.  And if you do…be somewhere else at that time.  Likewise, if you ride the car with the kids with the air-conditioner on, throw away the air freshener…

Tips To Protect Yourself From CANCER

    September 5, 2006

2242426591.jpgProtecting oneself from developing cancer is not a difficult task to do..but actually consist of simple measures that require precaution! Guidelines are provided by the American Cancer Society which are well thought of and very simple… but in general it’s really up to us to know them well and to follow the rules.

Here are some Tips that I recommend to every patient of mine based on years of accumulated evidence proven to reduce ones risk to develop cancer:

1.Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death! Even with this data, you can still see smokers in our midst. Common sense tells us: Quit Smoking!

    2. About 500,000 deaths from cancer is due to poor nutrition, inactivity and obesity! Excess calories have been shown to cause mutations of genes that lead to cancer of the colon and prostate. Common sense tells us: Be Fit and Move!

    3. Screening for these cancers are routinely done if asked for. The earlier majority of the cancers are caught the more likely they are treatable! Common sense tells us: Have a routine examination yearly.

    4. Routine examination of ones body for growing moles or lumps in the breast should prompt one to seek medical attention. Melanoma for example can be diagnosed early by routine body check. Common sense tells us: 15 minutes of sun exposure is needed to increase vitamin D level in the blood but expose yourself to the sun during the safest hours…before 10 AM or after 4 PM!

    5. Eat healthy with plenty of fruits and vegetables: One study in Scotland showed a 40% reduction in risk of developing cancer. Simple guideline is 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

    6. Get enough sleep and rest! A Stanford University study showed a good sleep pattern can reduce the risk to develop cancer.

They are not difficult tasks to do but again people are just refusing to follow the simple rules of preventive medicine.  We may not be able to prevent cancer but we can really reduce our risk from getting them by doing the right thing with the right attitude!

Prevention Is Still Better Than Cure!

Working Overtime Again?… Better Check Your Blood Pressure

    September 1, 2006

9084256.jpgStress indeed is the number 1 culprit in terms of its bad effects on ones health.  Stress comes in a variety of ways and can result in myriad of symptoms.

Working long hours has now been shown to be one form of stress that can affect ones health. A balance of time at work and time for relaxation is key to preserving ones health.

A new study published in the September Issue of  Hypertension looked at the relationship between working long hours and high blood pressure. The study invloved 55,000 household members in a 2001 survey done in California.

    The study revealed interesting facts:

Working 40 hours a week resulted in a 14% higher risk to develop high BP than working less than 20 hours

Working more than 40 hours increased that risk to 17%

Working more than 50 hours increased the risk to 29%

Clerical workers were 23% and unskilled workers 50% more likely to suffer from high BP than professionals

Challenging and Mentally stimulating jobs however tend to protect subjects from developing hypertension.

The above findings should have practical implications on the way we work. Long hours now counts as one risk factor for hypertension aside from common lifestyle bad behaviours like smoking and improper diet. If hypertension is not corrected, this will lead to strokes and heart attacks which can result in disability. If we can reduce that risk of developing hypertension and subsequently heart disease and stroke thru lifestyle changes including the way we work… the better!

With this in mind… Some Practical Lessons to Learn:

    1. If you are an employer… take care of your business by making sure your workers are healthy… teach them to be efficient so they can avoid working overtime.
    2. If you are a workaholic…think again… remember health is wealth! Working too late may not be productive after all! Take time to relax and instead work overtime in preserving your health.

Remember… What’s the use of earning extra bucks if you’ll spend them all to buy medications to treat your high blood pressure…and later for your heart disease due to uncontrolled stress and BP….

Better Think Twice Before You Work Overtime AGAIN….

Want to Lose Weight or Stay Slim?…Go Vegetarian!

    August 31, 2006

imagesthm.jpgWe are always taught that vegetables are good for the body. But eating vegetables should be learned from the time we learn how to eat! The problem comes with parents who don’t like vegetables and therefore don’t teach kids to eat them.

With the rising trend of obesity, we try to resort to anything that will give us a quick fix to this problem BUT the truth is… there will never be a quick fix. With the theory behind the Vegetarian Diet…it is really a healthy option and one alternative I’ll recommend to everyone who wants to lose weight!

So what do we know of eating vegetables and weight loss?

A study conducted by Cancer Reasearch UK from the EPIC Project looked at dietary habits of around 22,000 subjects and studied them over a 5 year period.

    The findings are interesting:

People who ate meat and continued doing so in the next 5 years gained more weight than those who switched to becoming vegetarians. The meat eaters gained around 2 kilos while the vegetarians gained only 0.5 kilos.

As I’ve mentioned in my previous post on High Protein Diet regarding protein sources, protein from vegetables definitely has lesser fat and calorie content than protein coming from a meat source.  It is therefore understandable as to why a diet fully on vegetables will have its advantages!

    • The high fiber content of vegetables make you feel fuller faster and therefore you eat lesser quantities of food and lose weight.
    • The fat and calorie content is lesser and therefore you don’t gain weight and stay slim!

So there you go guys, eat all the greens you like and you’ll never go wrong!

Negative Comments on Your Overweight Kids

    August 29, 2006

24803847242.jpgOne interesting blog  I read on health issues recently highlighted the obesity epidemic especially among children that is being sensationalized by the media for public consumption. People are now made aware of what health ill effects they bring so everytime I counsel patients regarding diabetes and obesity, I always ask the parents to bring the kids. And what I’ve noticed is when we start discussing about obesity, the parents then turn to their kids with comments regarding their weight.

Comments from parents ranged from being ugly, lazy and fat! These comments according to Medline Plus of the National Institute of Health sourced from the August issue of the Journal of Pediatrics result in kids developing low self esteem and the notion of lack of support from the family. Negative remarks on their weight resulted in lasting harm.

Practical Application of the Study Findings:

    1. We can be critical in our comments but contstructive.

    2. Focus in discussing about healthy food choices rather that the bad image of being overweight.

    3. Indulge yourself in outdoor activities with your children.

    4. Set an example to the kids by following your own rules: on healthy food options, and by exercising. Kids who see their parents exercise have been shown to result in leaner weights as adults.

So Parents…Remember your comments now may have negative lasting harm to your kids.

    Diet Tips From The Stars

    August 21, 2006

imagessder.jpgOne very interesting blog I’ve read on health and diet is titled Health, Fitness and Dieting Tips that has excellent articles on proper nutrition and dieting tips.

One article that I find interesting which will please my women readers are the dietary habits of the stars namely Oprah Winfrey, the Friends star Jennifer Aniston and supermodels like Christy Brinkley.

What I noticed is that they don’t resort to fad diets but rather they have routine dietary habits that are considered safe and healthy that incorporates an exercise regimen.  They stick to their diet and again The Key To Succesful Weight Loss, is the adherence to the diet and not the specific diet that makes one lose weight!

In short to keep ones weight down is simple… follow a diet… stick to it based on the following principles:

    1. Eat the right food in its right amount.  I always recommend the following proportions:40% of calories from fat ( < 10% from saturated fat, 10% polyunsaturated and 20% monounsaturated); 20% from protein and 40% from low glycemic carbohydrates. Talk with your dietician regarding this distribution.

    2. Avoid Junk Foods and

    3. Exercise : find the activities that you like that will burn calories.

Just look at the stars… if you believe you deserve to have the same bodies as they have then follow their rules in dieting.
