How To Prevent BAD BREATH

August 23, 2006

imageslll1.jpgPatients with diabetes are prone to gum disease. Good blood sugar control helps prevent gingivitis or gum disease but once they develop gum problem comes the dreadful BAD Breath!

The problem with Halitosis or bad breath however is not unique to diabetics.  Even your close friends may have it but not as a result of a disease but because of the more common cause of halitosis : poor oral hygiene.

I recently read an interesting article in The National Institute of Health Medline Plus August issue on a study conducted to determine if flossing helps prevent halitosis.  This study involved a total of 51 subjects: half of them brushed their teeth and tongue 2 x a day while the other half did the same plus regular flossing.

The RESULTS after 2 weeks of study showed that:

The group that did regular brushing plus flossing had 38% reduction in gum bleeding and bad breath.

Clinical Implication:

Just 2 weeks of regular brushing plus dental flossing can reduce gum bleeding and bad breath!

So guys…After brushing your teeth…

To Prevent BAD BREATH… Don’t Forget to Floss!

When it comes to bad breath, I’m very concious of it. It’s amazing when after brushing your teeth you found that there are still some food particles left ,stucked in between your teeth that only dental floss can dislodge. I now can’t do with out my floss and it’s an oral hygiene I practice religiously.Very sound advice Doc!

A chronic tonsillitis is also one cause of bad breath when not taken-out. I can prove that. My doctor says about my good set of teeth, 32pcs with all the incisors, canines, premolars, & molars. I was then an A-1 child but those were the days….. I’ve grown up to have my teeth brushed three times a day or every after eating esp. sweets. My mom will always remind us to floss but here comes……. tsk, tsk, tsk….I should take this (tonsil) out.

i started using dental floss myself and it really improved my oral hygiene. my gums are very sensitive and usually bleeds. Upon changing my toothpaste and do routine flossing, i don’t suffer gum bleeding anymore.

  5. i used to laugh when someone has a bad breath not because I make fun but my reaction on it is so funny as what my counterparts tell me.. the blog can help a lot on people who are too lazy brushing there teeths, they tend to have higher opportunities of having a bad breath.. so, if you want to talk confidently, the blog is a great help

Thanks for your comments Maffey… Yup the tonsils are sources of bad breath too. They also have concretions or holes in them that catch debris or food and gives us bad odor too.

The best solution is to take this out and I am already scheduled next week. Thank you doc.
